At a family party at the weekend my 8 year old nephew Jack asked: "Why don't you and Uncle Paul have any children, you have a playstation and enough room. Doesn't Uncle Paul know how to do it?"

After choking on my glass of wine I managed to keep a straight face and gave him some spiel about him, his brother, sister and cousin being a handful enough for us - and if we had our own we wouldn't have as much time to spend with them.

My friend David has finally got his hands on a new top secret prototype iPhone.

It comes with 80gb capacity, an 8megapixel camera, built in sat nav, karaoke system and innovative handsfree solution.

I probably shouldnt be showing it to you, but here is a picture:

IPods, spare knickers and passports are packed so we're off on our trip to New York, San Francisco, LA and Las Vegas (with plenty of places in between).

Thought I would give you what I hope you will find useful advice based on things I have discovered in the last month or so:

1 A bowl of olives and red wine is not a nutritious dinner

2 It's not a good idea to drive in the sun with the car roof off without protection. It gives you sun burn, which is bad enough, but you also get a fetching white strip where the seat belt was

3 Showing off and eating whole chillis in an Indian resturant might seem big and clever at the time…
